YORK US 30 DRAGWAY THE SUPER STRIP #019 DVD
This one hour and forty-four minute original movie production takes a look at racing activities at York US 30 Drag Strip during the 1950's, 60's and 70's. We have also included bonus footage from Cecil County Dragway and New York National Speedway .
The video begins in 1957 when racing was just getting started at York US 30 Drag-O-Way. We show a great group of cars running at the track several of which were 1957 Chevy’s. George Whalen and Tom Maroon both raced 57’s and you will hear their story during this segment. Another guy racing in the 1950's was Funny Car Legend Bruce “USA-1" Larson . We have included a story about Bruce’s ‘32 Chevy Altered and you might be surprised when you hear who owned it before Bruce.
As we move forward to the early 1960's we look at more of the great cars that came to York from the Mid-Atlantic region. The Wilmington (Delaware) Automotive Activities Car Club raced several cars at York and you will hear Fred Welch and Ross Donovan tell the story of the club and their cars. Great stuff! Lots of Gassers, Altereds, Dragsters and Stockers are included in this segment.
In the early 1960's York hosted several NHRA Regional Races that brought competitors to York from all over the country. We try to name as many of the cars as we can and you will see that they come from near and far to race at the Super Strip. This segment also introduces you to the members of the Chambersburg (PA) Motor Knights car club and the cars they raced. In addition to racing their cars they also shot movies of the races they attended and we get to see some of them in this production.
We have also included a segment from the 1965 Super Stock Magazine Nationals . Most of the footage was shot by Roy Stoutamyer of the Chambersburg Motor Knights and it has absolutely killer pit shots of all the famous cars. You will see the Hurst Hemi Under Glass ‘65 Cuda being towed into York on a two axle open trailer. We also see BX-10 being applied to the slicks of Dave Strickler ’s AWB Dodge and The Tasca Ford Mustang. How about Phil Bonner packing the chute on his ‘65 A/FX Falcon and John Healey working on the Tasca Ford Carb’s. This stuff is priceless. We have also included some terrific still photos of the famous cars that we received from Scott Curt. I have never seen any better shots than those taken by Scott. We also talked to Kenny Vogt (Bob Ford Tbolt), Sam Auxier, Jr (65 Comet A/FX), George Weiler (Honker Dodge), Bill Lawton (Tasca Ford) and Mr. Bob Tasca Sr and they give you their impressions of the event.
After the Super Stock Nat’s we take you to Cecil County Dragway and show you some time runs during the 1965 Cars Magazine Meet. How about Dyno Don’s ‘65 Comet, Bill Jenkins Black Arrow Ply, Dick Landy AWB Dodge, Dick Housey Plymouth, Ronnie Sox and more.
We return to York in 1966 for another NHRA event and you get to see several Funny Cars along with a whole bunch of gassers, altereds, dragsters and stockers. Jack Chrisman’s ‘66 Comet Roadster is featured and you get to see it in the pits as well as on the track. We also break away and go to New York National Speedway where we see the run where the Comet ran off the track and burned to the ground. This may be the only footage of that run that still exists.
The video then moves to the 1970's and we see a whole bunch of bracket race cars going down the track at York. We were able to identify many of them so the narrative is informative and entertaining.
Next up is the 1972 Super Stock Magazine Nationals. This segment is really cool because we have some footage that contains the original sound from the event. Although we are proud of what we do to dub real car sounds on to the footage that we use in our productions there is something special hearing the original sound. Back in the 70's there were no two-steps or studder boxes. Back then all these racers did was stand on it and pop the clutch. You have to see and hear this group of Pro Stock cars go through the gears while running in the mid-nine second zone. It is totally classic. This segment concludes with a match between Bill Jenkins and his Vega and Jungle Jim ’s Pro Stock Vega Wagon. You get to see the burn-outs , back-ups , dry-hops and through the roof RPM’s from these historic cars. I am sure you will play this segment over and over again!
From there we go to racing in 1977 and you get to see some really cool twilight Funny Car racing complete with all the sounds and roof tall header flames.
The closing segment is from 1979 the final year of racing at York. This segment has it all. Alcohol and Fuel burning Funny Cars, High Winding Modified Production Cars, Pro Stockers, Stockers, the Chicago Fire Jet Dragster and Sammy Millers Vanishing Point Rocket Powered Funny Car . The first round of racing is during the daytime and the second round is under the lights. You have to see it to believe it. One of the match-ups has Larry Fullerton ’s Trojan Horse Funny Car going up against the Chicago Fire Jet Dragster. Too cool! King of Cool however is Slammin’ Sammy Miller and his three second 386 MPH Rocket Funny Car. You won’t even believe it when you see it.
